Challenges
The challenges ahead include bootstrapping SEL Stars while working two jobs, managing all aspects of the startup independently, and dealing with limited support. Despite these hurdles, the biggest challenge is racing against well-funded competitors who are quickly advancing in the SEL space. This underscores the validity and potential of my idea, but also highlights the urgency to secure financial support and build a dedicated team to ensure SEL Stars can thrive and make a significant impact.
Our Story
One pivotal experience was combining Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) with my English tutoring sessions. I saw firsthand how integrating SEL transformed the school kids (of various ages) in my tutoring groups. They gained self-confidence, learned to manage their emotions, and were better equipped to handle the everyday challenges of school and family life. Witnessing these changes was incredibly rewarding and reinforced my belief in the importance of SEL.
These transformative experiences with my students inspired me to envision a broader application of SEL. I realized that SEL could be the key to unlocking the potential within each individual, helping them thrive not just academically but in all aspects of life. This led me to incorporate SEL into my English tutoring at the local Schülerhilfe, and ultimately to the creation of SEL Stars.
Starting SEL Stars was a leap of faith, driven by late nights, countless sacrifices, and unwavering determination. The idea was to offer SEL courses as a separate program, initially using the premises of the Bornheim Schülerhilfe to get started. Despite the challenges of bootstrapping and limited support, the vision was clear: to create a supportive, engaging learning environment where individuals can grow, connect, and thrive.
SEL Stars is not just a startup; it’s a movement to cultivate emotional wisdom and resilience. It’s about transforming lives one lesson at a time and building a future where emotional intelligence is as valued as academic success.
